It’s been a busy few weeks with my sister Martha and her boyfriend Jesse visiting (more to come on that later in my next recap of recent events), and while they were here we got to participate in an extremely fun and rewarding project for Calcutta Rescue. Our flatmate Dr. James Fox decided to create a music video starring Calcutta Rescue students, teachers, and volunteers to the tune of Pharrell William’s song “Happy” to help raise funds that will go towards the purchase of a new school building. You might have seen some of the many other tribute music videos of this song, including the one from Tehran which sadly led to the arrest of the young men and women who created it.
We shot our video in the building we want to replace, Number 10 School, one of the two free schools run by Calcutta Rescue where I am volunteering as a school nurse. Number 10 School is so named for the address of the current building, a former brothel that was procured by CR’s founder, Dr. Jack, and turned into a school some 25 years ago. Like Tala Park School, No. 10 School provides free education, healthcare, and nutritional support for another 300 disadvantaged children living in the slums and streets of Kolkata.
We had so much fun making this video, and I was so happy to be a part of it! Most of all, I was awed by the amount of talent, joy, and inspiration we found in this school, which surpassed all of our expectations.
Prepare to be amazed by these incredibly adorable and talented students, and if you feel moved to support our efforts to buy them a new school, please consider making a donation or just sharing with your friends! Thank you!
